Kazakhstan Plans to Reintroduce Kulans, Tigers in 2026

Kazakh Minister of Ecology Yerlan Nyssanbayev has said that Kazakhstan plans to bring several kulans and 3-4 tigers into the country next year as part of efforts to boost biodiversity.

The country has seen population growth among rare species such as argali, goitered gazelle, kulan, and Bukhara deer. Large-scale projects are also underway to reintroduce the Turan Tiger and Przewalski’s horse, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

In cooperation with Prague Zoo, 14 Przewalski’s horses were brought to Kazakhstan in 2024-2025, with 7-8 more planned for June 2026. Tigers will be delivered from Russia to the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve under a free transfer agreement.
