Minister: Landmark Abai National School in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Nears Finish Line

Kazakh Minister of Enlightenment Gani Beissembayev has said that construction of the first Abai Ulttyq Mektebi (National School) in Almaty is nearing completion.

The project transforms the former Republican Specialized Secondary Boarding School named after Abai - a renowned institution for gifted students specializing in Kazakh language and literature, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

Founded in 1950, the school has produced numerous prominent cultural figures, public servants, and state leaders.

Beissembayev described Abai as “an intellectual brand of Kazakhstan on the international stage,” noting that the new school will function not only as a modern educational facility but also as an international intellectual hub. It will focus on creating and testing innovative educational programs, advanced teaching techniques, and diverse extracurricular activities.

He expressed confidence that the Abai Ulttyq Mektebi will produce not only accomplished graduates but also leaders capable of combining Kazakhstan’s national values with the forward-looking energy of the younger generation.

Currently, around 200 schools in Kazakhstan and two in Türkiye bear the name of Abai Kunanbayuly, the celebrated poet, educator, and founder of modern Kazakh literature. His birthday, August 10, has been officially marked in Kazakhstan since 2020.
