A new island has emerged in Kazakhstan’s part of the Caspian Sea, apparently as a result of falling water levels.

Yerbolat Mukhashov, founder of Caspian Holiday, said that new islands have been appearing in the northern Caspian Sea over the past four to five years as sea levels have declined, zakon.kz reports.

The new land formations have been observed around several islands inhabited by Caspian seals, including Kulaly, Morskoy, Svyatoy, Podgorny, Usharal, Mayakshykan and Dolgiy.

One of the recently emerged islands, named Rybachiy, is located about 500 meters east of Svyatoy Island and approximately 30 kilometers from the village of Bautino.

Mukhashov said wolves are among the main inhabitants of the islands, while wild boars and badgers can also be found there. The surrounding waters and islands are home to various species of fish and birds.

He said he was able to visit the new island with the assistance of Mangystau environmental expert and Caspian Sea advocate Daniyar Akimzhanov.

“This area is distinguished by its amazing and picturesque nature,” Mukhashov said.

The newly emerged island was also captured from the air, offering a bird’s-eye view of the changing landscape of Kazakhstan’s Caspian coastline.
