Kyrgyz Border Serviceman Dies After Self-Inflicted Gunshot Incident

A contract serviceman in Kyrgyzstan who suffered a severe gunshot wound at a border post has died in hospital.

The soldier, 22, was receiving treatment at a hospital in the Gulcho area of the Alay district. Despite intensive medical efforts and doctors’ attempts to save his life, he died from a head injury caused by the gunshot, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Officials said a service investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

The State Border Service previously reported that on April 8, a contract serviceman stationed at the “Irkeshtam” border post in the Alay district of Osh region had discharged his service weapon, resulting in a self-inflicted injury. The serviceman was in possession of his issued firearm at the time.

Preliminary findings indicate the incident is not related to the performance of military duties.
