Kyrgyz Boxer Exits World Championships After Loss to Cuban Olympic Champion

Kyrgyz boxer Almaz Orozbekov has been eliminated from medal contention at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool after a defeat to Cuban Olympic champion Erislandy Alvarez.

Competing in the 65-kilogram weight category, Orozbekov opened his campaign in the round of 1/16 finals, securing a commanding 5:0 victory over Bulgaria’s Viktorio Iliev, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

In the round of 1/8 finals, he faced top-seeded Erislandy Alvarez. After three closely contested rounds, the judges awarded a split decision victory, 3:1, to the Cuban athlete.

With the loss, Orozbekov’s pursuit of a medal at the championships has come to an end.
