China, Russia Agree to Expand Cooperation in Uranium Mining and Processing

China and Russia are deepening cooperation in the nuclear sector after reaching an agreement to collaborate on uranium exploration, mining, and processing technologies.

The agreement was announced following a visit by a delegation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to Russia’s largest uranium mining enterprise, the Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Union (PIMCU), a key part of Rosatom’s mining division located in the Trans-Baikal region, The Caspian Post reports via TASS.

Led by Chinese Academy of Sciences Vice President He Hongping, the delegation included leading experts in geology, geophysics, and rock mechanics. During the visit, the scientists toured several major mining facilities, including the Tulukui and Krasny Kamen open-pit mines, the construction site of Mine No. 6, and a heap-leaching facility used to process low-grade uranium ores.

As part of the new partnership, Russian and Chinese specialists agreed to exchange expertise in uranium exploration and geological surveying, jointly develop technologies for processing low-grade and substandard ores, and launch collaborative research projects aimed at improving resource extraction efficiency.

According to representatives of the Russian company, the geological characteristics of uranium deposits in Russia and China share many similarities, creating favorable conditions for scientific and technological cooperation.

The visit is more than a simple exchange of experience,it is a foundation for future scientific collaboration and innovation in mineral resource development.

The Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Union is the flagship of Russia’s uranium mining industry and one of the largest industrial enterprises in the Trans-Baikal region. Its primary activity is the production of uranium oxide concentrate, which is later enriched for use within Rosatom’s nuclear fuel cycle.
