Chief of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation Andriy Kovalenko has said that a fire broke out at the Dorogobuzh thermal power plant in Russia’s Smolensk region, disrupting electricity supplies to a nearby chemical facility crucial for the Kremlin’s defense industry.
The Dorogobuzh chemical plant produces ammonia, nitrates, and nitrogen fertilizers, essential for explosives and other military-grade nitrate compounds, The Caspian Post reports, citing Ukrainian media.
Kovalenko warned that the plant cannot operate without power from the damaged station, potentially halting critical output.
The thermal plant also supplies energy to multiple defense-linked enterprises in Smolensk, including metallurgy, instrument manufacturing, and military repair facilities.
The incident coincided with one of Russia’s largest overnight drone attacks, hitting sites around Moscow and strategic energy facilities in Smolensk. The Dorogobuzh plant typically generates about 90 MW of electricity and over 240 Gcal/hour of heat, supporting both industrial operations and residential areas.
