Path Opens for Erdogan’s Third Presidential Bid in Türkiye

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could be eligible to seek another term in office during the 2028 elections under a constitutional provision that allows an exception to standard term limits.

Mehmet Uçum, a chief presidential adviser and deputy chair of the Presidential Legal Policies Council, said the next parliamentary and presidential elections should be held on May 7, 2028, rather than May 14, as some analysts have suggested, The Caspian Post reports via TASS.

Uçum said that Türkiye’s electoral calendar requires elections to take place before the expiration of the current five-year term. Since the last general elections were held on May 14, 2023, the next vote would fall on the preceding Sunday, May 7, 2028.

He also revealed that authorities are discussing the possibility of moving the elections slightly earlier, to April 16, 2028. Uçum stressed that such a move would not constitute early elections in the political sense, but rather a technical adjustment of the scheduled voting date by a few weeks.

Under this scenario, Erdoğan, who has already served two consecutive presidential terms, could gain the legal right to run once more under constitutional provisions governing elections called before the end of a term.

Uçum argued that such a decision would be fully consistent with Türkiye’s constitution and should not be viewed as an attempt to circumvent term limits. He noted that similar adjustments to election dates have occurred in the past and did not require extraordinary circumstances.
