Russia has confirmed the second imported case of Chikungunya fever, with the patient being a relative of the first confirmed case.
Another individual is undergoing medical examination, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
“During the epidemiological investigation following the detection of the first imported case of Chikungunya fever, and through contact tracing, two more individuals with elevated body temperatures were identified. One of them tested positive for the Chikungunya virus,” the Russian Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) said.
All the affected individuals are family members who had traveled together to Sri Lanka. A third patient with a fever is currently undergoing further testing.
Chikungunya fever is characterized by a sudden high fever, chills, joint and back pains, as well as a rash.
The virus was first identified in Africa in the mid-20th century. By 2025, it began spreading rapidly across South Asia. From January to July alone, 240,000 cases and 90 deaths were reported across 16 countries.
