Russian Strike Leaves 12,000 Without Power in Ukraine's Chernihiv

A Russian strike on energy infrastructure in northeastern Ukraine has left around 12,000 people without electricity, raising renewed concerns over ceasefire violations.

The attack hit Chernihiv region, damaging a key energy facility. Emergency services said repair work will begin once security conditions allow, The Caspian Post reports via Ukrainian media.

The regional energy provider confirmed widespread outages following the strike, which came as Russia’s announced Orthodox Easter ceasefire period was nearing its end.

Ukrainian officials say the truce has already been violated thousands of times, casting doubt on its effectiveness.

Chernihiv region, located near Ukraine’s northern border, has been frequently targeted by drone and missile strikes since the start of the war. Energy infrastructure has repeatedly been hit, causing widespread disruptions to electricity, heating, and water supply.

Earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared an emergency in the energy sector after major attacks triggered large-scale outages during freezing conditions.

Kyiv has repeatedly called for a halt to strikes on critical infrastructure and recently proposed an energy ceasefire through U.S. intermediaries, offering reciprocal restraint if Russia agreed. Moscow has not yet accepted the proposal.

The restoration work in Chernihiv remains delayed due to ongoing security risks, leaving residents facing continued uncertainty over essential services.
