More than 90 strikes hit Ukraine’s Sumy region over the past 24 hours, killing at least four civilians and injuring 11 others as attacks intensified across the border region.
The strikes targeted 44 settlements in 18 territorial communities, causing widespread damage to homes, civilian infrastructure, and communications facilities, The Caspian Post reports via Interfax Ukraine.
In the Sumy community, drone attacks killed two people and injured seven others. Additional casualties were reported in the Stepanivka, Popivka, Hlukhiv, and Berezivka communities. In the Novoslobidska community, a drone strike on a residential building left one civilian dead.
The neighboring Chernihiv region also came under heavy attack, with officials reporting 41 separate strikes. Fires and explosions destroyed a shop in the Semenivka community, while communication infrastructure and forestry areas were damaged elsewhere. In another village, a residential house and tractor were reportedly destroyed.
The latest wave of attacks follows a deadly drone strike on a kindergarten in central Sumy on May 6 that killed two people and injured seven others. Authorities have declared May 7 a day of mourning in the region.
Meanwhile, Russia announced a temporary ceasefire for May 8-9 ahead of Victory Day commemorations, while warning of possible retaliatory action if hostilities continue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would respond in kind to any violations while prioritizing civilian safety amid ongoing fighting.
