Tajik young freestyle wrestler Ayubjon Bozorzada captured a bronze medal at the U17 World Wrestling Championships in Athens.
He secured a dominant 6:0 victory over German wrestler Jason Keil in the third-place match, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
The Tajikistan Wrestling Federation (TWF) celebrated Bozorzada’s achievement, describing it as:
“A bronze worth its weight in gold! Ayubjon Bozorzada, a promising young athlete, has earned a well-deserved medal. His journey was far from easy - days before the tournament, his participation was uncertain due to visa issues.
Additionally, Ayubjon had to lose 4 kilograms in a short period to meet the competition’s weight requirement. Despite these obstacles, he reached the podium. We believe this is only the beginning of a brilliant wrestling career.”
The championship brought together top young wrestlers from around the globe, competing across Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women’s wrestling categories.
Tajikistan’s delegation included six athletes: five in Greco-Roman wrestling and one in freestyle.
Tajikistan’s U17 Wrestling Team:
Mahdi Barotov (55 kg)
Amirjon Obidov (60 kg)
Shohijahon BOBOEV (65 kg)
Alisher Ruzimadov (71 kg)
Sultonzoda Muhammad (80 kg)
Ayubjon Bozorzada (71 kg) - Freestyle
Earlier in the tournament, Mahdi Barotov also secured a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman 55 kg category. His medal-winning campaign featured intense matches, culminating in a dramatic showdown against Azerbaijani athlete Nihat Bahmanov, a highly technical and aggressive opponent. Barotov displayed tactical composure and determination, winning the bout 9:5.
The event was hosted by United World Wrestling (UWW), which also unveiled the schedule for the upcoming 2025 World Championships:
