Tajikistan and OSCE Discuss Future Prospects of Comprehensive Cooperation

On April 29, at the Palace of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, Leader of the Nation, received Ms. Pia Liisa Kauma, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and Member of the Finnish Parliament.

The meeting discussed the current state and prospects of comprehensive cooperation between Tajikistan and the OSCE, including interparliamentary relations, The Caspian Post reports citing local media.

The President of the country emphasized that Tajikistan considers the Organization to be an important institution for constructive dialogue in all three dimensions - military-political, economic-environmental and human.

It was stressed that Tajikistan supports the priorities of the Finnish Chairmanship in the field of conflict prevention in the OSCE area, confidence-building, combating transnational crimes and other issues.

During the discussion of security issues, it was considered important to strengthen partnership in countering global threats and dangers, including within the framework of the “Dushanbe Process on Combating Terrorism and Its Financing”. At the same time, it was noted that addressing security challenges still requires further coordinated measures.

Regarding the economic and environmental dimension, it was considered appropriate to enhance cooperation to implement effective projects in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular to strengthen real sectors of the economy, improve infrastructure and develop regions.

Issues related to water and energy resource management, climate change and natural disaster prevention were also named as priorities for cooperation.

Ensuring gender equality, expanding women’s participation in socio-economic life and protecting human rights and freedoms were among the topical issues of the meeting.

It was underlined that in the human dimension, the Tajik side is ready to continue cooperation with the Organization within the framework of the National Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the field of human rights protection for the period until 2038.

A fruitful discussion also took place on specific international and regional issues, including addressing existing crises and creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence across the OSCE area of responsibility.
