Tajikistan has taken a major step toward upgrading its transport infrastructure after reaching an agreement with a Kuwaiti consulting firm to rehabilitate the Ayni-Kuhistoni Mastchoh road in the country’s northern Sughd Province.
The agreement was signed in Dushanbe on December 29, 2025, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
The document was inked by Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrojhim and Ahmad Makhrus Ahmad Muhammad Aish, the authorized representative of NARCO - Dr. Nabeel Abdul-Raheem Consultants. The contract officially entered into force on January 12, 2026.
Under the deal, NARCO will prepare the technical and economic justification as well as a detailed design for reconstructing the 162-kilometer road, originally built in the 1960s and granted republican-level status in 2015. The project envisions modernizing the road surface, widening the carriageway, and upgrading engineering systems to meet international standards.
Once completed, the route will be classified as a Category IV road and divided into two sections:
Ayni district - Mehron village (80 km), the administrative center of Kuhistoni Mastchoh
Mehron village - Dehhisar village (82 km)
The rehabilitation plan also includes the construction of 27 bridges and 405 culverts, significantly improving safety and travel comfort for both drivers and passengers.
Officials say the project will strengthen regional transport links, create new jobs, and boost economic activity in the area. Modernization of this key route is expected to improve quality of life and support long-term development in northern Tajikistan.
With more than 45 years of experience, NARCO provides engineering consulting services in infrastructure development and has taken part in over 50 major international projects, including initiatives supported by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
