Some diesel locomotives operated by Turkmenistan Railways have been successfully overhauled and modernized at China’s CRRC Ziyang Co., Ltd.
The locomotives, which have been in active service for nearly 20 years and covered over 2 million kilometers, underwent comprehensive restoration after their arrival in China in May 2025, The Caspian Post reports, citing Turkmen media.
The work included precision repairs to key components such as bogies, diesel engines, and electrical systems, as well as integration of new-generation control systems, real-time safety monitoring, and ergonomic upgrades.
The project follows a 2024 agreement between CRRC Ziyang and Turkmen Demiryollary to carry out systematic repairs and technical upgrades for aging rolling stock - the first time Turkmen locomotives have been returned to China for factory-level refurbishment.
According to CRRC Ziyang, the overhauled locomotives now comply with advanced international standards and will return to Turkmenistan to resume operations on the national rail network in the coming weeks. In support of long-term maintenance, the Chinese company also conducted technical training sessions for Turkmen engineers and developed standardized service manuals to ensure reliable upkeep.
This successful project underscores the evolving partnership between CRRC Ziyang and Turkmenistan, which began in 2004. Over the years, the collaboration has grown beyond basic exports to encompass full industrial chain cooperation, including vehicle supply, spare parts production, and factory maintenance services.
To date, CRRC Ziyang has delivered 294 locomotives to Turkmenistan - accounting for more than 98 per cent of the country’s railway fleet. The latest modernization effort exemplifies the effectiveness of the “product + service” international cooperation model, while also strengthening transportation ties under the Belt and Road Initiative.
