Turkmenistan Set for Major CIS Railway Summit in 2026

Turkmenistan’s capital, Ashgabat, is set to welcome the 84th Council meeting of the CIS Railway Transport Council in May-June 2026, following an official proposal approved by the city and the Ministry of Railway Transport.

This major international forum will bring together heads of railway administrations from across the Commonwealth of Independent States, marking Ashgabat’s return as host since 2012, The Caspian Post reports via Turkmen media.

Hosting the event highlights Turkmenistan’s growing influence in the international transport system and underscores ongoing efforts to develop its transport infrastructure under President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Leveraging its strategic location, Turkmenistan is actively integrating into global logistics networks by building major hubs aligned with initiatives like the Great Silk Road revival and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

The CIS Railway Transport Council, where Turkmenistan has been a key member since 1992, plays a vital role in coordinating regional railway cooperation, policy alignment, and international transport management.

The official date and venue of the 84th meeting will be announced at the 83rd session in Baku, Azerbaijan, scheduled for November 25-26, 2025. Discussions will focus on enhancing train schedules, pricing, performance, and further cooperation among member states.
