EBRD Eyes $80M Loan for Battery Energy Storage in Uzbekistan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is exploring an $80 million (68 million euros) loan to develop, construct, and operate a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Uzbekistan.

The project envisions a 150 MW installation with 300 MWh capacity, with a total estimated cost of $100 million, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

If approved, the senior loan would be provided to Celest FE LLC, a special-purpose company established to implement the project. The sponsor is Dubai-based renewable energy firm AMEA Power. The EBRD plans to make a final financing decision by February 11, 2026.

The facility, planned for Tashkent region, will provide ancillary services to the national power system and help mitigate the variability of renewable energy generation, enhancing grid resilience and reliability.

Founded in 2016, AMEA Power develops and builds clean energy projects totaling over 2.6 GW across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The company is already active in Uzbekistan, having signed investment agreements earlier this year to build a 1 GW wind farm and a 300 MWh energy storage system, in line with its strategy to expand in Central Asia.
