IFC, Young Architects Unite to Drive Sustainable Construction Innovation in Uzbekistan

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, in partnership with the Young Architects Association of Uzbekistan, has launched the National Green Building Design Competition as a flagship event of the 2025 Uzbekistan Green Building Forum, aiming to inspire architects, designers, and students to create projects addressing Uzbekistan’s harsh climate, energy efficiency needs, and sustainable construction challenges.

The competition signals the country’s increasing dedication to sustainable development and adherence to global standards in green architecture, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Given Uzbekistan’s hot summers, limited water resources, and wide seasonal temperature swings, the competition emphasizes climate-adaptive and energy-efficient building solutions. Such approaches aim to minimize environmental impact, reduce operational costs, and improve occupant comfort and health.

Entries are open in two categories-students and professionals-with submissions accepted until September 10, 2025. Participants may submit either completed projects or new designs created for the competition. Judging criteria focus on sustainable design principles, including use of climate-responsive strategies, eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and innovative green building tools.

Winners will be announced on October 6, 2025, at the forum’s final event in Tashkent.

In addition, the IFC and the Association of Young Architects will hold a free webinar, “Fundamentals of Green Building,” on August 14, 2025. The webinar will be led by Vasudevan Kadalayil, an architect and international consultant renowned for sustainable building projects across Asia and Africa.

The session will cover key sustainable design principles and feature a practical demonstration of IFC’s EDGE tool (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies), which supports the creation of energy-efficient buildings.
