A heroic act in Saint Petersburg may soon open the door to Russian citizenship for a 36-year-old janitor from Uzbekistan.
Khairullo Ibadullaev, who caught a seven-year-old boy falling from a seventh-floor window, could receive citizenship through a simplified procedure, Nikolai Novichkov of the “Fair Russia” faction said, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.
Novichkov praised Ibadullaev’s bravery as deserving recognition and said such life-saving deeds should qualify for expedited citizenship. The janitor has already received the Tigran Keosayan Prize of 1 million rubles, which he plans to send to his family in Uzbekistan to build a home and cover his father’s medical treatment.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also awarded him the “Jasorat” (Courage) medal for his heroism. Ibadullaev has expressed his determination to master the Russian language and pursue citizenship in Russia.
The incident occurred when the autistic boy, playing near an open seventh-floor window with a tablet, lost his balance and fell, briefly catching the ledge before plunging downward - only to be saved by Ibadullaev’s quick reflexes.
