Uzbek String Instrument Joins UNESCO Intangible Heritage List

During the UNESCO session in New Delhi, India, Uzbekistan’s nomination, “Art of crafting and playing kobyz” (an ancient, sacred Turkic bowed string instrument) has been unanimously inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The recognition highlights the cultural and historical significance of the kobyz, a traditional string instrument from Karakalpakstan, and the zhyrau storytelling tradition (traditional singer, poet, and storyteller of epic poetry and historical tales), The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

The kobyz features a leather-covered, arc-shaped body with two horsehair strings, decorated with local woods like mulberry and apricot, and is played with a horsehair bow. Portable and tied to nomadic traditions, it accompanies epic tales told in distinctive throat singing by zhyrau performers.

UNESCO’s decision is expected to support research, safeguard master-apprentice traditions, develop educational programs, and boost international cooperation around the kobyz and zhyrau heritage.
