Uzbekistan, Afghanistan Reopen Termez–Hairatan Crossing

The Termez-Hairatan border crossing between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan has reopened for citizens of both countries, marking the first time the route has become operational again since 2021.

Border checkpoints on the “Friendship Bridge” over the Amu Darya River have resumed operations, facilitating travel and trade between the two nations, according to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.

The restoration of the direct crossing is expected to simplify journeys and create new opportunities for exports.

Visa requirements remain in effect for both Afghan and Uzbek citizens. The CCI noted that after the crossing was closed, business trips to Afghanistan became significantly more complicated. Although the distance from Ayritom to Mazar-i-Sharif is only 75 km, entrepreneurs previously had to make the journey via Tajikistan, taking up to a full day.

The reopening of the direct route is anticipated to provide greater convenience for Uzbek exporters. The CCI estimates that trade volumes could reach up to $2.5 billion in 2026.

To support market access in Afghanistan, a range of incentives will be offered to businesses. These include full compensation for warehouse rental costs in Hairatan and Mazar-i-Sharif, as well as coverage of advertising expenses for products across all Afghan regions.
