Uzbekistan, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Explore Joint Biotech Lab

Uzbekistan is stepping up efforts to become a regional leader in biotechnology, as Abdulla Azizov, Director of the Uzbek Pharmaceutical Industry Development Agency, have held a high-level virtual meeting with the leadership of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) to explore joint initiatives and scientific collaboration.

The meeting centered on strategies to develop Uzbekistan’s biotechnology ecosystem, enhance research and development infrastructure, and strengthen international scientific ties, The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.

ICGEB representatives shared details about the organization’s global research portfolio, membership opportunities, and extensive support programs for scientists, including research grants, fellowships, and advanced training courses.

One of the key outcomes of the discussion was Uzbekistan’s proposal to establish a joint biotechnology research laboratory in cooperation with ICGEB. The envisioned lab would serve as a hub for innovation, applied research, and knowledge exchange in genetic engineering and related fields.

Both sides also emphasized the importance of integrating Uzbek researchers into global scientific networks, encouraging their participation in ICGEB-supported projects, and enhancing domestic expertise through international training and mentorship programs.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Uzbekistan and ICGEB agreed to initiate formal cooperation, ensure Uzbekistan’s active involvement in ICGEB’s scientific and educational programs, and work jointly on developing and implementing international research projects.
