Türkiye's Russian-made S-400 air defense systems have reportedly been sold to a Gulf country.
Columnist Abdulkadir Selvi wrote that, based on information available to him, the S-400 systems have been transferred to a third country and that an official announcement could follow soon, The Caspian Post reports via the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
According to the report, the buyer is believed to be either the United Arab Emirates or Qatar, although Selvi noted that it is best to wait for an official confirmation. He also claimed that technical issues related to the deal were resolved shortly before the expected announcement.
Turkish authorities have not commented on the report, and no official confirmation of the sale has been issued.
A day earlier, Hürriyet reported that Ankara was exploring a legal formula to address US concerns over the S-400 purchase, potentially assisting Türkiye to lift CAATSA sanctions and rejoin the F-35 fighter jet program. The newspaper suggested that selling the S-400 systems to a Gulf country was among the options under discussion. Another Turkish newspaper, Oksijen, identified the United Arab Emirates as the most likely buyer.
Türkiye purchased four S-400 air defense system batteries from Russia in 2017 under a deal worth approximately $2.5 billion, a move that led to US sanctions and Türkiye's removal from the F-35 program.
