Uzbekistan Braces for Near-Record Power Demand as Heatwave Intensifies

Uzbekistan is preparing for near-record electricity consumption as soaring temperatures are expected to push power demand close to historic highs.

At a meeting of the Republican Emergency Headquarters, officials reviewed measures to ensure the fuel and energy system remains stable during the period of extreme heat, maintain uninterrupted electricity supplies, and strengthen oversight of energy use across the country, The Caspian Post reports via the Uzbek Ministry of Energy.

According to the ministry, daily electricity consumption is forecast to reach around 280 million kWh, while peak demand is expected to climb to between 13 and 13.3 GW, placing significant pressure on the national power grid.

To cope with the increased load, energy companies have been instructed to ensure the reliable operation of power networks and substations, intensify round-the-clock monitoring of energy facilities, and carry out preventive maintenance.

The meeting also examined the causes of recent emergency outages at several substations in Tashkent. The ministry said officials responsible for operational shortcomings have been held personally accountable, with several managers removed from their positions.

As an additional safety measure, the Ministry of Energy will temporarily suspend the loading and unloading of liquefied gas during the hottest hours of the day to reduce the risk of fires and explosions.

The ministry said joint inspections involving the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Uzenergoinspection, and the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety will be carried out to ensure compliance with industrial and fire safety regulations at energy and fuel infrastructure facilities.

Officials also discussed anti-corruption measures, warning that employees convicted of corruption-related offenses will be dismissed, while managers across the energy sector have received strict warnings over their personal responsibility.

Uzbekistan's all-time electricity consumption record stands at 283 million kWh in a single day, excluding electricity generated by small-scale solar panels. The previous summer record of 272.6 million kWh was set on July 18, 2025, while the country's winter peak in 2025 reached 271.8 million kWh.
