Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan Enter New Phase of Water Cooperation

Uzbekistan has completed the internal procedures required for the agreement on the joint management and rational use of transboundary water bodies with Kazakhstan, marking a new stage of cooperation between the two neighbors.

The move paves the way for closer coordination in managing shared water resources and strengthening sustainable development across the region, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

The agreement, signed on November 15, 2025, aims to deepen the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan by developing systematic cooperation in water management, improving coordination between relevant agencies, and increasing the efficiency of water use.

On March 6, 2026, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a resolution ratifying the international treaty, officially bringing the deal closer to implementation.

Minister of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamrayev said stronger water cooperation with Kazakhstan is vital not only for the two countries but also for the sustainable development of the wider region.

He noted that effective management of shared water resources requires constant dialogue, mutual trust, and joint responsibility. The partnership between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, he added, demonstrates a constructive approach aimed at ensuring rational water use, protecting ecosystems, and building sustainable water infrastructure in Central Asia.
