President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has urged Armenians to proceed cautiously when deciding the country’s geopolitical direction, warning against repeating what he called the “Ukrainian scenario.”
Speaking after the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, Lukashenko said Armenia must carefully weigh its future path between the Eurasian integration bloc and closer ties with Europe, The Caspian Post reports via BelTA.
He suggested that many recent political statements in Armenia are linked to the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, arguing that debates about potentially leaving the EAEU and shifting toward the European Union are being influenced by the electoral cycle.
Lukashenko also referred to a joint statement by EAEU leaders supporting the idea of a referendum in Armenia, stressing that the bloc is not exerting pressure on the Armenian people. However, he claimed that some political narratives are being used for campaign purposes.
“We are not pressuring the people, but we understand this is political play ahead of elections,” he said, adding that some developments are “bringing humiliation to the EAEU,” the message says.
The Belarusian leader issued a warning to Armenia not to “repeat the Ukrainian scenario,” urging restraint and careful decision-making.
“Armenians have just come out of conflict - they should not end up in a difficult situation. There is no need to rush; people must be wise,” he said.
Lukashenko also claimed that external actors are benefiting from the current political situation in Armenia, indirectly referring to European politicians who, according to him, made promises during visits to Yerevan earlier in May.
