The US has approved Narek Mkrtchyan, Armenia’s current Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, as the country’s new ambassador to Washington.
The reason for the delay in Mkrtchyan’s departure to the US remains unclear, The Caspian Post reports via Armenian media.
The appointment has drawn mixed reactions within the Armenian government, with some officials questioning his readiness and ability to serve effectively in the diplomatic role.
The mandate of the current Armenian ambassador to the US, Lilit Makunts, who was appointed in 2021, expired on August 2, 2025. The new appointment has not yet been formalized, and the president has not signed a decree extending Makunts’ mandate. Consequently, under Armenian law, she has been unable to officially represent the country since August 3.
