Azerbaijan and Peru have held the first round of political consultations between their foreign ministries, marking a new stage in their 29-year diplomatic relationship.
The consultations took place during a visit by an Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov, while the Peruvian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Félix Denegri, The Caspian Post reports via the Peruvian news agency.
“The meeting signifies the beginning of a new stage of cooperation and strategic dialogue between Azerbaijan and Peru,” the ministry stated.
During the discussions, Denegri emphasized the shared interest in strengthening bilateral ties and noted that the consultations would facilitate joint projects in tourism, security, culture, and sports, highlighting their potential positive impact on both nations.
In turn, Mammadov underscored the importance of deepening collaboration with regional organizations such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Pacific Alliance, of which Azerbaijan has been a member since 2019.
The two sides also explored opportunities for mutual investment and stressed their roles as important geo-economic connectors, with Peru strategically positioned in the Asia-Pacific region and Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus.
The ministries highlighted their shared millennia-old cultural heritage and agreed to strengthen technical cooperation, exchange expertise, and collaborate on the protection and preservation of cultural assets.
Moreover, Mammadov is set to deliver a lecture at the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru.
The lecture is organized by the university’s Center for Asian Studies in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
During his presentation, Mammadov will provide an analysis of the political situation in the South Caucasus and highlight the key priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy.
Founded on May 12, 1551, by decree of Spanish King Carlos I, the National University of San Marcos is the oldest university in Peru and in all of Latin America, and remains one of the region’s most prestigious public higher education institutions.
