World Intellectual Property Day is marked on April 26, highlighting the importance of innovation, creativity, and legal protection of ideas worldwide.
The day was established in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and is also actively observed in Azerbaijan through events organized by the country’s Intellectual Property Agency, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
Patent and invention activity in Azerbaijan has grown significantly. In 2025, the number of applications for inventions, utility models, and industrial designs rose sharply compared to the previous year, reflecting a strong increase in innovation activity.
A total of 214 patents were issued in 2025, up by 15.7% compared to 2024, while trademark applications also exceeded 4,000. The upward trend continued into early 2026, with invention-related applications doubling in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
Officials also highlight ongoing digital modernization through the “PENAH” electronic system, which streamlines patent and trademark registration processes.
Education in intellectual property is also expanding in Azerbaijan, with specialized departments established at leading universities such as Baku State University and Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction, assisting to train future experts in the field.
