IMF Urges Coordination to Counter Iran War Impact

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday called for coordinated global action to mitigate the economic fallout from the US-Israeli-Iranian war.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 IMF Spring Meetings in an address titled “Cushioning the Middle East War Shock,” Georgieva urged countries to avoid unilateral measures such as export restrictions and price controls, warning that such steps could further destabilize global markets, The Caspian Post reports, citing Xinhua.

She emphasized that fiscal authorities should focus on delivering targeted and temporary assistance to vulnerable groups, ensuring that such measures remain consistent with medium-term fiscal strategies.

Georgieva also stressed that central banks must be ready to act decisively, including raising interest rates if inflation expectations begin to lose their anchor and risk triggering a sustained surge in prices. At the same time, she reiterated that fiscal interventions should remain limited in scope and duration.

“We are working with countries to help them better target fiscal support and design effective sunset clauses for temporary measures,” she said, adding that financial regulators and supervisors must remain vigilant and adaptable in the face of ongoing uncertainty.

She further underlined the importance of prudent use of fiscal resources, noting that both micro- and macro-prudential policies should be employed to reduce risks to financial stability and maintain a resilient economic system.

Georgieva also pledged continued IMF support for member countries navigating the uncertain environment, indicating that near-term demand for balance-of-payments assistance could rise to between $20 billion and $50 billion due to the broader spillover effects of the Middle East conflict.
