"Tuberculosis remains one of the world's deadliest diseases, claiming 1.25 million lives annually, despite being both preventable and treatable," said Dr. Suvanand Sahu, Deputy Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership, in an interview with The Caspian Post at the COP29 Summit in Baku.
Speaking about the fight against TB, Dr. Sahu highlighted the transformative potential of innovative tools now available to address the disease. "We have cutting-edge technologies, including digital and decentralized solutions, powered by artificial intelligence. These tools are climate-friendly and can significantly strengthen health systems, detecting not just TB but other diseases as well," he stated.
Dr. Sahu emphasized the role of climate financing in scaling these interventions. "Climate financing is an important additional source to expand TB care. By leveraging such funds, we can make these innovative tools accessible to people in need, especially in remote regions."
Reflecting on his discussions with Azerbaijani officials, Dr. Sahu praised the country’s efforts to adopt new technologies in healthcare. "We met with the Honorable Deputy Minister of Health, civil society representatives, and TB survivors. Together, we explored how Azerbaijan can implement innovative solutions, such as solar-powered molecular diagnostic devices. These electricity-free tools are portable and can reach even the most remote parts of the country."
He noted that one such device, donated by the manufacturer with support from the Stop TB Partnership, has already been delivered to the Azerbaijan Institute of Technology. "This is a clear example of successful collaboration between the government, global stakeholders, and our partnership," Dr. Sahu added.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Sahu called for global solidarity in the fight against TB. "This is a disease that can be prevented, diagnosed, and treated. With the right tools and financing, we can prevent unnecessary deaths and build stronger, more resilient health systems worldwide."
