Tensions remain high after rare, high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran ended without a breakthrough, despite nearly a full day of intense negotiations in Islamabad.

JD Vance confirmed that no agreement had been reached, even as both sides engaged in what he described as extensive and serious discussions, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The U.S. had put forward its "final and best offer," Vance said, noting that talks were conducted in "good faith," but ultimately failed to secure Iran’s approval. The collapse comes despite what officials called one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between the two countries in decades.

At the heart of the negotiations is the future of Iran’s nuclear program. Vance stated that Iran's enrichment facilities have been "destroyed," shifting Washington’s focus toward securing long-term guarantees from Tehran.

"The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon," Vance said. "That is the core goal of the president of the United States and that's what we've been trying to achieve through these negotiations."

Iranian media struck a different tone. The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the talks failed due to what it described as U.S. "excessive demands," which prevented both sides from reaching a common framework.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei revealed that discussions over the past 24 hours covered a wide range of sensitive issues - from the Strait of Hormuz to sanctions relief, war reparations, and a broader end to regional conflict.

He emphasized that progress depends on mutual seriousness and respect for Iran’s rights, warning that excessive demands and unlawful requests could derail diplomacy.

The Islamabad talks were widely seen as the highest-level contact between Washington and Tehran since the Iranian Revolution - a moment that reshaped relations and froze direct engagement for decades.

Before the negotiations began, both delegations met separately with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who expressed hope that the dialogue could pave the way for lasting regional stability.
