FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran's national football team may participate in this summer’s World Cup in the US despite rising tensions in the Middle East.

Infantino said he met with US President Donald Trump on March 10 to discuss tournament preparations and Iran’s participation, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

After the meeting, he wrote on Instagram:

During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.

However, the team’s arrival remains uncertain. Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s soccer federation, recently said participation could be in doubt. "What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope," he told the sports portal Varzesh3.

Even before the latest tensions, Iran’s participation faced challenges due to US travel restrictions. Iranian fans were told they would not receive visas to attend the tournament, raising questions about whether supporters could watch the matches if the team plays. Last year, the Iranian delegation almost boycotted the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., after more than half of its members were denied visas.

Infantino emphasized that the tournament is a moment for global unity, even amid geopolitical tensions. "We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever. Football unites the world," he wrote, thanking Trump for his support.
