In a televised interview on Monday, January 19, Mashhad’s mayor, Qalandar Sharif, reported that the damage caused by the January 2026 protests in the city is estimated to exceed 2 trillion tomans.

The mayor stated: “Over 2 trillion tomans in damage has been inflicted solely upon the urban infrastructure, as well as the fundamental and surface facilities under the municipality’s jurisdiction,” The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.

He further noted that “no sector of the municipality or the city” remained immune to the damage. The Mayor of Mashhad claimed that the objective of these damages, alongside “creating riots, unrest, murder, and looting,” was to undermine “urban management and municipal services.”

In excerpts of the mayor’s remarks published by state media, there was no mention of protesters being killed or of how many people were injured during the demonstrations. Reports say that during the recent protests, Islamic Republic security forces opened fire on protesters in Iran's city Mashhad, leading to many deaths and injuries.

Information received from medical personnel in Mashhad indicates a high number of fatalities and injuries during the January protests in this city.
