Iran is seeking to establish a joint mechanism with Oman aimed at ensuring long-term security in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday.
Baghaei stated that Tehran is prepared to work with other coastal nations to develop protocols that would guarantee the safe movement of shipping traffic through the strategic waterway, although he did not provide additional details about the proposed framework, The Caspian Post reports, citing Al Arabiya.
The Strait of Hormuz has faced severe disruption since the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel escalated in late February. Iran has largely restricted passage through the strait to its own vessels, triggering what has been described as the biggest disruption to global energy supplies in history.
In response, the US imposed its own blockade on Iranian ports last month, further intensifying tensions and raising concerns over global oil shipments and maritime security in the region.
