U.S. President Donald Trump said he believes he must be personally involved in selecting Iran’s next leader following the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In an interview with Axios on Thursday, Trump said he wants a direct role in the leadership transition in Iran, drawing a comparison to what he described as his involvement in political developments in Venezuela, The Caspian Post reports.
Trump acknowledged that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian leader, is widely considered the most likely successor. However, he said he opposes that possibility and described Mojtaba as “a lightweight.”
“They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela,” Trump said during the interview.
Trump added that he would not accept a new Iranian leader who continues the policies of Ali Khamenei, warning that such an outcome could lead to renewed conflict with the United States in the future.
“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” he said.
Ali Khamenei was killed in recent U.S.-Israeli strikes, triggering a leadership crisis in Iran and speculation over who will succeed him as the country’s supreme leader.
Iran has not yet officially announced a successor, while political and religious institutions in the country continue consultations on the next leadership of the Islamic Republic.
