Several flights at Kazakhstan's Almaty International Airport have been delayed due to heavy snowfall, according to the airport’s online flight board.
Departures to Atyrau (three flights), Aktau, and Urumqi are affected, while arriving flights from Shymkent, Atyrau, Fukuoka, Phuket, Zhezkazgan, Dubai, Kyzylorda, Urumqi, Petropavl, and Beijing are also experiencing scheduling disruptions, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.
The airport press service emphasized that there are currently no widespread cancellations, and operations continue in normal mode.
Almaty has been severely affected by the snowfall, which caused 10-point traffic jams across the city. The National Weather Service, Kazhydromet, reported that the snowfall, which began late on January 15, is expected to continue until the evening of January 17.
Authorities have launched a massive snow-clearing operation, mobilizing over 1,200 vehicles-including 200 from private contractors-and 2,710 workers for round-the-clock efforts. Additionally, 1,790 janitors are deployed to clear snow from residential neighborhoods.
