Kazakhstan Adopts New Constitution After Nationwide Referendum

Kazakhstan has officially adopted a new Constitution following a nationwide referendum that met all legal requirements.

Speaking at a briefing, Nurlan Abdirov, Chairman of the Central Referendum Commission, announced that the vote was deemed valid under constitutional law, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

He noted that for the referendum to pass, more than half of eligible voters needed to participate in at least two-thirds of the country’s regions, including cities of national significance and the capital.

Abdirov noted that the threshold was successfully reached across the country. In every region, the majority of participating citizens voted in favor of adopting the new Constitution.

He added that the legal condition-requiring majority support from voters in at least two-thirds of Kazakhstan’s 20 regions-was fully satisfied. As a result, the new Constitution has been officially recognized as adopted.
