Kazakhstan, Afghanistan Launch Joint Water Management Center to Tackle Climate and Food Security Challenges

Kazakhstan and Afghanistan have agreed to establish a joint education and research center focused on water resource management, irrigation, and sustainable agriculture, marking a new step in regional cooperation on critical environmental and food security issues.

The agreement was signed by the Kazakh National University of Water Management and Irrigation, the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, and Kabul University during a visit to Afghanistan led by Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, Serik Zhumangarin, The Caspian Post reports via dairynews.today.

New Center to Open at Kabul University

The new facility will be based at Kabul University, Afghanistan’s largest and oldest public university. It is expected to serve as a hub for specialist training, scientific research, and knowledge exchange in key areas such as water management, irrigation, sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, and food security.

Kazakh Experts to Lead Research and Training

Kazakh scientists and experts will play a central role in the center’s activities, assisting to develop educational programs, train professionals, conduct joint research projects, and introduce modern technologies to the water and agricultural sectors.

Particular emphasis will be placed on practical solutions for efficient water use and agricultural development in the face of climate change and growing environmental pressures.

Focus on Water Security and Sustainable Development

The center’s work will focus on several strategic priorities, including water security, sustainable farming, environmental monitoring, climate resilience, and food security. Its interdisciplinary approach aims to generate real-world solutions that support long-term regional development.

Founded in 1932, Kabul University is one of Afghanistan’s most prominent academic institutions, with 22 faculties and a broad scientific base. The partnership is expected to expand international cooperation and create new opportunities for joint educational and research initiatives between the two countries.
