A major boost in economic ties is on the horizon as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan ramp up efforts to significantly expand bilateral trade - with an ambitious target of reaching $1 billion.
During an official visit to Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev held high-level talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov, signaling a new phase of deepening strategic cooperation, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
“Thanks to the political will of our heads of state, our relations have reached a qualitatively new level over the past three years,” Kosherbayev stated, highlighting the rapid evolution of ties between the two nations.
The numbers tell a compelling story: bilateral trade has surged fivefold in just five years, hitting $470.7 million in 2025. Now, both sides are determined to more than double that figure, unlocking new opportunities through investments, industrial partnerships, and expanded market access.
A key driver of this growth is the development of major infrastructure initiatives, including the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route - a vital corridor linking Asia and Europe. Plans are also advancing for a fiber-optic communication line and a deep-sea power cable across the Caspian Sea, further strengthening connectivity.
Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone, with Kazakhstan looking to expand transit of its resources to global markets via Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, agriculture, telecommunications, and industrial sectors are emerging as new pillars of collaboration, supported by the growing role of the Kazakh-Azerbaijani Direct Investment Fund.
The partnership extends well beyond trade. Cultural exchanges are thriving, with successful “Days of Culture” events held in both countries. Educational ties are also strengthening, as universities expand cooperation through reciprocal academic programs.
Tourism is booming too - with around 30 weekly flights connecting cities in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, making travel easier than ever.
The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely within major international platforms, including the United Nations and the Organization of Turkic States, underscoring their shared vision on regional and global issues.
With momentum building across multiple sectors, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are not just strengthening bilateral ties - they’re shaping a powerful economic and strategic partnership for the future.
