Kazakhstan and Hong Kong have signed a series of agreements on extradition and mutual legal assistance, marking a major step toward deeper cooperation in combating transnational crime and recovering illegally acquired assets.
During a working visit to Hong Kong, Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General Berik Assylov held talks with Hong Kong Secretary for Security Chris Tang, who oversees the region’s law enforcement and emergency services, including police, customs, immigration, prisons, fire, and rescue units, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two sides in extraditing wanted individuals, fighting organized cross-border crime, and improving legal coordination.
Particular attention was given to the search and recovery of illegally withdrawn assets, as well as efforts to combat money laundering and the legalization of criminal proceeds.
Following the meeting, the parties signed a package of interstate agreements covering:
the surrender of fugitive offenders,
mutual legal assistance in criminal matters,
and the transfer of sentenced persons.
Kazakhstan and Hong Kong also agreed to expand the exchange of operational and forensic information, share best practices in investigating crimes involving modern technologies and artificial intelligence, and continue cooperation on broader legal and security issues.
