Kazakhstan, Hungary Push Forward Joint Freight Terminal to Boost EU Exports

Kazakhstan and Hungary have intensified discussions on a joint project to build an intermodal freight terminal in the Budapest metropolitan area, designed to increase Kazakh exports to the EU.

The proposal featured prominently during a meeting between Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov and Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, who is currently in Kazakhstan on his first official visit, The Caspian Post informs via the Kazakh prime minister's website.

Beyond the terminal project, the two nations explored broader avenues for cooperation. Among the key topics was a strategy to expand Kazakhstan's exports to Hungary across 95 different product categories, potentially opening up new markets for Kazakh goods.

The joint terminal is intended to serve as a logistical bridge-facilitating smoother, more efficient freight flow from Kazakhstan into EU supply chains. While details on financing, construction timeline, and terminal capacity are still being worked out, both governments expressed strong commitment to moving the project forward.

The discussions reflect Kazakhstan’s ongoing strategy to deepen trade links with the EU and strengthen its export infrastructure, while Hungary appears keen to deepen economic collaboration with Central Asian partners.

Further negotiations are expected in coming months to finalize agreements covering investment, operations, and trade facilitation related to the terminal and expanded export deals.
