Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Set to Open New Border Crossing for Freight Traffic - VIDEO

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are preparing to open a new border checkpoint in Kazakhstan’s Zhambyl Region, a move expected to improve cross-border trade and streamline cargo transportation between the two neighboring countries.

The new checkpoint, known as Nizhny Chuy, will primarily serve freight and road transport and is expected to operate around the clock after receiving international status, The Caspian Post reports via 24.kz.

The project is designed to simplify border crossings and increase the efficiency of cargo movement along one of the region’s key transport routes.

“Preparatory work is currently underway at the site. Land conversion issues have been completed, and the construction of technical facilities has already begun. The opening of the checkpoint is expected soon. However, it will mainly be intended for freight vehicles,” said Mirkhamir Sydykov, First Deputy Chairman of Kyrgyzstan’s Border Service.

The two countries agreed to establish the additional road border crossing last year, and the initiative received formal approval after being ratified by Kyrgyzstan’s parliament, the Jogorku Kenesh, in spring 2026.
