Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are taking their longstanding partnership to a new level, as strategic integration deepens across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
On August 22, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will make an official visit to Kyrgyzstan, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.
Over the past 33 years, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have developed cooperation across nearly all spheres, with their partnership steadily deepening in quality. This progress is underpinned by a robust legal framework of 150 bilateral agreements.
In April 2025, the two countries signed the Treaty on Deepening and Expanding Allied Relations, covering cooperation in political, economic, transport, water and energy, and agricultural sectors, including joint efforts to enhance food security. The treaty also emphasizes the strengthening of spiritual and cultural ties between the fraternal peoples of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
The two presidents play an active role in fostering cooperation, regularly participating in significant political and international events.
Kazakh political analyst Assol Mirmanova highlighted that the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan is grounded in historical ties, cultural affinity, and aligned economic interests.
"There is a clear trend toward genuine regional integration - a qualitative shift in policy that strengthens joint positions. This trend is reflected not only in state programs but also in the human dimension: our peoples are connected through numerous interethnic marriages and kinship ties, fostering trust and supporting sustainable cooperation," Mirmanova explained.
The expert also highlighted that large-scale projects are advancing under this integration framework. These initiatives range from transport and logistics-including a new cross-border logistics complex, road reconstruction, and development of the Almaty-Bishkek corridor-to energy and agro-industrial projects, such as the Kambar-Ata HPP-1 and agricultural zones in the Chuy region. These projects create a solid institutional foundation for deeper cooperation.
Kazakhstan is one of Kyrgyzstan’s leading trade, economic, and investment partners. In 2022, Kazakhstan became Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest trading partner among EAEU member states.
Last year, bilateral trade reached $1.7 billion, with the goal of expanding it to $3 billion. Experts note that achieving this target requires a steady increase in mutual trade, joint investment projects, diversification of goods, and strengthened business partnerships.
In 2024, Kazakh exports to Kyrgyzstan rose by 9.6 per cent, reaching $1.3 billion, while imports from Kyrgyzstan fell 15.7 per cent to $456 million. The trade relationship is characterized by economic complementarity: Kazakhstan primarily exports metal products, grain, petroleum products, and construction materials, whereas Kyrgyzstan supplies gold, coal, iron ore, and light industry goods.
