Kazakhstan Reveals 2026–2029 Nuclear Cooperation Roadmap

During a meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna, Kazakhstan has showcased its “roadmap” for cooperation in the nuclear sector for 2026-2029.

The Kazakh delegation, led by Deputy Chairman Gumar Sergazin, met with IAEA Deputy Director-General Liu Hua to discuss current collaboration and future plans under technical assistance programs for 2026-2027 and 2028-2029, The Caspian Post reports via the Kazakh Atomic Energy Agency.

The roadmap outlines priorities including safe nuclear energy development, regulatory strengthening, workforce training, scientific and educational infrastructure, expanded use of nuclear medicine, and initiatives related to ecology, climate change, food security, veterinary services, and water resources.

Special attention was given to nuclear power plant construction and infrastructure development. Kazakhstan stressed the importance of IAEA support in strengthening the national regulator and enhancing legal frameworks for nuclear plant design, construction, and operation.

The sides agreed to form an IAEA working group to analyze the roadmap and provide recommendations, and also discussed nuclear medicine and oncology cooperation, including partnerships between Kazakhstan’s National Scientific Oncology Center and relevant IAEA units.

IAEA confirmed its readiness to fully support Kazakhstan in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
