Kazakhstan Strengthens Role in Europe’s Oil Supply

Kazakhstan ranked as the second-largest supplier of crude oil to the European Union in 2025, according to data released by the EU Council.

During the year, Kazakhstan exported 55.8 million tonnes of crude oil to the EU, placing it just behind the United States, which supplied 63.5 million tonnes, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

Norway ranked third with 55.7 million tonnes-slightly below Kazakhstan’s total.

The EU Council stated that these three countries were the bloc’s largest oil suppliers in 2025, with Kazakhstan accounting for approximately 12% of total imports.

In total, the EU imported around 435 million tonnes of crude oil valued at more than €212 billion in 2025, highlighting the bloc’s continued dependence on external energy sources.

The data also shows a significant decline in imports from Russia. Russia’s share of EU oil imports dropped from 25.8% in 2021 to just 2.2% in 2025, as the EU shifted toward alternative suppliers such as the United States, Norway, and Kazakhstan.
