Kazakhstan Targets New Oil and Gas Reserves with Sinopec Partnership

Kazakhstan has launched a new phase of geological exploration at the Berezovsky subsurface block in the country's West Kazakhstan region, aiming to identify promising structures and expand its hydrocarbon resource base.

The exploration is being carried out by Akkaiyn Operating LLP, a joint venture between Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company KazMunayGas and Sinopec International Energy Investment Holding Netherlands B.V., Qazinform News Agency reports.

The current 2D seismic survey covers 899 full-fold linear kilometers, with seismic profiles extending approximately 1,114 kilometers. Fieldwork combines two exploration techniques: vibration-based surveying and controlled blasting.

More than 24,000 locations are being surveyed using specialized vibroseis vehicles, while controlled blasting operations are being conducted at over 3,500 locations. Microseismic logging has also been completed at 149 points to provide a more detailed assessment of the upper geological formations.

The Berezovsky block is located southeast of the Karachaganak oil and gas field in West Kazakhstan region.

Previous exploration conducted by KazMunayGas included 2D seismic surveys covering 338 full-fold linear kilometers. The results revealed several promising structures in subsalt formations, indicating potential for further hydrocarbon exploration.

The broader exploration program envisages both 2D and 3D seismic surveys, followed by data processing and interpretation. It also includes plans to drill an exploratory subsalt well to a depth of 7,000 meters, alongside comprehensive geological and geophysical studies.

Sinopec is financing the exploration phase of the project.

The Berezovsky initiative forms part of KazMunayGas' broader strategy to improve geological understanding of Kazakhstan's territory, identify new prospective hydrocarbon areas, and strengthen the country's resource base.
