Kazakhstan Tops Central Asia in Median Age

Kazakhstan’s population is getting older, researchers say.

According to data from Ranking.kz, the country’s median age - the point at which half the population is younger and half is older - now stands at nearly 32 years, the highest in Central Asia, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The figure slightly surpasses the global average of just over 30 years, positioning Kazakhstan among the more mature populations worldwide. By comparison, the median age in Russia is 42 years, Germany 46, and Japan 50 - while in contrast, 21 African nations report a median age below 20.

Kazakhstan’s average life expectancy has reached 73.3 years, with a notable gender gap: women live about nine years longer than men, the widest difference among Central Asian countries.

Adding to the demographic snapshot, the nation’s total population has grown by 104,000 people since the start of 2025, reflecting a steady upward trend amid shifting age dynamics.
