KazMunayGas, LanzaJet Chart Path for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Plant in Kazakhstan

Chairman of KazMunayGas Askhat Khassenov and senior executives of US-based LanzaJet have reviewed the recent Feasibility Study and outlined next steps for developing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility in Kazakhstan during a high-level meeting in New York.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a Framework Agreement between KazMunayGas and LanzaJet, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

This agreement formally endorses the Feasibility Study findings and launches the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, during which detailed technical and economic plans for the plant’s construction will be finalized. Market forecasts indicate that Kazakhstan’s demand for SAF could reach up to 70,000 tons annually by 2030.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation and supports our low-carbon development goals as well as the deployment of advanced technologies,” said Khassenov. “The project will stimulate growth in the biofuels market, improve aviation’s environmental footprint, and enhance Kazakhstan’s transit potential.”

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an environmentally friendly jet fuel produced from renewable, non-petroleum sources. When blended with traditional Jet A-1 kerosene, SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 per cent.

LanzaJet is a global leader in alcohol-to-jet SAF production technology, developed in collaboration with the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The company holds long-term supply agreements with major airlines such as All Nippon Airways, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.
