New Public Holiday in Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan could soon mark a new national public holiday, as March 15 - the date of the upcoming constitutional referendum - is being considered as the country’s new Constitution Day.

Speaking to journalists in the Senate, Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev explained that under the transitional provisions of the draft law, the new holiday would be tied to the day the Constitution is adopted, not the date it enters into force, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

“As far as I recall, the wording refers to the day of adoption. The day of adoption and the day of entry into force are different. According to the draft transitional provision, it is the day of adoption - March 15,” Ashimbayev said.

However, he emphasized that the final decision will depend entirely on the outcome of the nationwide referendum. Citizens will determine the country’s constitutional future through their vote.

“If the people support it, we will have a new Constitution and Constitution Day will be celebrated on March 15,” the Senate Speaker noted.

Currently, Constitution Day in Kazakhstan is an official state holiday and a non-working day. If approved, the new date could reshape the country’s calendar and mark a significant moment in its ongoing political transformation.
